Atlassian Server End of Support is Here. Are You Ready?

On Thursday, February 15, 2024,ย Atlassianโ€™s Server products will no longer be supported. This means Atlassian and Marketplace partners will no longer provide technical support for any issues, security updates, or bug fixes for Server.

If you are still on Atlassian Server licensing and have not yet developed a plan to move away from it, Oxalis can help guide your decision. At Oxalis, we see this as a great opportunity for our customers to make a calculated transition to dynamic solutions that work for their data management and collaboration strategy. Whether itโ€™s moving to Atlassian Cloud or Data Center, there are numerous options for addressing compliance needs or regulations.

What End of Support Means

After 12:00 a.m. PST on February 15, 2024, Atlassian and Marketplace Partners will no longer provide technical support for any issues, security updates, or bug fixes for critical vulnerabilities. Regular security updates help protect your business from threats and vulnerabilities, so we recommend moving to Atlassianโ€™s Cloud or Data Center products to ensure you continue to receive the critical support and services you need.

This transition applies to the following Atlassian Server products:

  • Jira Software Server
  • Jira Core Server
  • Jira Service Management Server
  • Confluence Server
  • Bitbucket Server
  • Crowd Server
  • Bamboo Server
  • Atlassian-built Server applications

Risks of Remaining on Server Products

Remaining on Server products after February 15, 2024 poses several risks, and you should act now to mitigate them.

  1. Increased vulnerability to security threats: Organizations that choose to remain on Server products will be at a higher risk of security threats, such as data breaches and cyberattacks. This is because security patches and updates will no longer be provided, leaving servers exposed to vulnerabilities.
  2. Lack of compliance with industry standards: Organizations that continue to run unsupported software may fall out of compliance with industry standards and regulations, such as PCI DSS and HIPAA. This can result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.
  3. Limited scalability and flexibility: Server products have limited scalability and flexibility, making it difficult for businesses to adapt to changing business needs and growth. This can result in reduced productivity and competitiveness.
  4. Reduced reliability and performance: Server products will no longer receive updates and patches, and server performance and reliability may decline over time. This could lead to downtime and business disruption, detrimentally affecting productivity and revenue.
  5. Limited support and services: Organizations that remain on Server products after the end of support period will have support limited to Cloud migrations or DC upgrades, making it difficult to resolve server issues and get help when needed. This can result in longer downtime and increased business disruption.

How Did Atlassian Get Here?

Atlassian has been preparing for this major transition since 2020. Oxalis has been helping organizations define and execute their migration strategies in preparation for this milestone.ย

This ensures that organizations get the help they need, when they need it, reducing the risk of downtime and other issues that can affect their business.

Benefits of Moving to Atlassian Data Center

For many organizations, moving to Atlassian Cloud isnโ€™t feasible due to their compliance or other business requirements. Oxalis has helped many organizations design a cost-optimized Data Center hosting architecture that meets their compliance and performance requirements.

Migrating to Data Center licensing allows for:

  1. Easy Transition: Atlassian has committed to making the transition from Server to Data Center licensing seamless.
  2. Higher Security: Organizations can deploy Data Center products in the hosting solution they prefer. This can include a cloud provider, such as AWS or Azure, as well as on-prem hosting solutions.
  3. Performance and High Availability: Data Center ships with the ability to be used in clustered environments for High Availability, but also in a simple (not clustered) configuration if you do not have this requirement.

Moving to Data Center can also serve as a temporary solution for organizations to ensure they continue to operate on a supported platform as they plan their Cloud migration journey.

Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile Application Updates

We’re thrilled to announce the Oxalis team has been working on an NSRP Rapid Adoption Project (RAP), in partnership with the Navy and Fincantieri Marine Repair (FMR), to expand the capabilities of the Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile Application. This new functionality will support the digital capture of records, including Condition Founds Reports, improving efficiency and decreasing the cycle time to submit various records.

Key Mobile App Capability Updates

  • Support new record capture in the Oxalis Ship Repair System, including Condition Found Reports
  • Mobile record creation is built for scale and expansion, with the ability to support any type of record, such as Hot Work Permits
  • Leverages existing functionality of the mobile app including offline capabilities

A Quick Recap:

In 2022, Oxalis completed a pilot of the first release of the Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile Application in partnership with FMR. Oxalis developed a secure, offline-capable mobile solution for digitally executing checkpoints, including capturing signatures. This led to a number of benefits for shipyards and their customers, including:

  • Reduced cycle time for checkpoint result submission to Navy Maintenance Database (NMD)
  • Elimination of paper forms and the need for contractors to manually transcribe checkpoint results
  • High-quality digital OQE to simplify audits and availability certifications
  • Support Contractor and Navy goal of achieving digital workflow and increasing the efficiency of data flow

Following the success of the pilot with FMR and the rollout of the mobile app to multiple shipyards, Oxalis was awarded an NSRP RAP to expand the capabilities of the mobile application to support Condition Found Report capture. The Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile App is an integral part of the larger Oxalis Ship Repair System, which acts as a central hub for coordinating and managing work and document flows throughout the repair process.

NSRP Rapid Adoption Project (RAP)

Why RAP? The Rapid Adoption Project model enables a collaborative framework for the development, delivery, and pilot of new technologies and processes to improve efficiencies across the U.S. shipyard industrial base. Through the program, Oxalis is able to quickly develop, iterate, implement, train, and pilot the solution with Fincantieri Marine Repair in less than 6 months.

The Rapid Adoption Project encompassed two critical aspects:

  1. Training and field testing. While the project was not primarily aimed at proving the technology itself, we acknowledge that mobile technologies’ benefits to distributed workforces have long been established. Instead, we focused on refining our system and ensuring seamless integration within various Maritime operations. By investing in extensive training programs and rigorous field testing, we have fine-tuned the Oxalis Ship Repair System to meet the specific needs of the industry.
  1. Meeting Tactical Needs: Condition Found Reporting (CFR): Within the comprehensive Oxalis Ship Repair System, one particular area where we have addressed a pressing need is condition found reporting. Recognizing the importance of timely and accurate submission of CFRs, our team at Oxalis has been working diligently on creating digital solutions to enable efficient CFR submission and approvals.

Project Timeline

As of June 2023, we anticipate development and pilot testing with FMR to be complete by August 2023. The next steps are to execute the first pilot availability using the updated Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile App.

The Rapid Adoption Project is not about proving technology. We’ve proven technology, mobile technologies through OSRS.  The benefits of this system aid an underserved and distributed workforce. Its software capabilities for Shipyards and Maritime companies are unlike anything on the market today.

– Micah Waldstein – Director of Product Management

Takeaways:

  • The Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile Application is an integral part of a larger system OSRS that coordinates and manages work, process flows, and information from various stakeholders involved in the repair process.
  • The results of our first pilot using the mobile application for checkpoint execution are described in our “TIP Mobile Application Pilot Resultsโ€ whitepaper. If youโ€™d like to request a copy of the report, please do so using the form at the bottom of this page.
  • The Oxalis Ship Repair Mobile Application is an offline-capable mobile app integrating with the Oxalis Ship Repair System that supports the digital execution of checkpoint results and the submission of new records, such as Condition Found Reports.
  • Oxalis developed a roadmap and framework for introducing new digital technologies across the U.S. shipyard industrial base.

The implementation of the Oxalis Ship Repair System has demonstrated significant improvements in Maritime and Shipyard processes. Our commitment to continuous improvement, extensive training, and thorough field testing ensures that our solution meets the specific needs of these industries.

We are expecting to conduct a webinar demo later this year and are excited to continue to share updates with you.

AWS GovCloud User Guide

Things you’ll learn

What is AWS GovCloud (US)?

AWS GovCloud User Guide is here to help you. Amazon Web Service’s GovCloud offers the similar services and the same high level of security as AWS, and meets specific regulatory and compliance requirements of US government agencies โ€“ such as FedRAMP High, ITAR, DFARS, and HIPAA โ€“ by running on a dedicated U.S. platform of hardware, network, and software, that are maintained by U.S. citizens only and provide customers with the ability to access the regions through FIPS 140-2 service endpoints.

GovCloud is available to federal government contractors and organizations in regulated industries, and is used by educational institutions.

For companies, government entities, and other organizations that do not have the manpower, capital, or other resources to host applications and digital workloads on their own, the AWS GovCloud offering provides the necessary compliant hosting infrastructure in the cloud. Quickly satisfy compliance requirements, such as CMMC Levels 1 through 3, without the overhead and risk of managing a data center on your own [Read our perspective on the state of CMMC here]. GovCloud offers all of this capability along with the traditional benefits of cloud scale and speed.ย Get started with Oxalis AWS GovCloud services. The services available with AWS GovCloud do differ from the services available with the public cloud offering of AWS, though AWS strives constantly to narrow the gap. For standard workload requirements, application hosting, or storage needs, services residing on Amazonโ€™s sovereign cloud are more than sufficient, compliant, and safe to use; if there are specific services you need in GovCloud, AWS provides a guide to the service differences. Continue reading our AWS GovCloud User Guide to decide if this platform is right for you.

Can I Trust the AWS GovCloud Services?

Well, that’s a good question. The answer is โ€œYesโ€.ย You can trust in the AWS Govcloud Services.

The Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Army, and countless government and intelligence agencies are all landing mission critical workloads on this infrastructure.ย

However, please note, AWS GovCloud is just a platform. Without a trusted partner or in-house knowledge of this advanced technology, you can quickly get yourself into trouble. Data exposures, compromised services and systems, or worse have all happened when organizations do not develop, deploy, or maintain well architected and operated cloud solutions.ย

Advantages of Moving to the Cloud

If you are thinking about moving to the cloud, chances are you have considered these main advantages. For those who are still evaluating, here are the primary advantages of moving your workloads to the cloud in a generic sense:

  • Elasticity โ€“ Using auto-scaling and load balancing, only use resources according to your demand.
  • Cost Savings โ€“ Only pay for the computing power, storage, and resources that you use! The AWS cloud also has no long-term contracts or up-front commitments.
  • Flexibility โ€“ You choose the system, programming language, and services that are right for your business.

AWS GovCloud (US) offers all of these advantages, with the addition of high security and compliance.

Thinking about migrating to the Cloud? Check out our post detailing out 5 Considerations for your AWS Cloud Migration Strategy.

Amazon GovCloud, Summarized:

  • GovCloud is a compliant hosting infrastructure in an isolated section of Amazonโ€™s AWS cloud.
  • GovCloud is equipped to handle all categories of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) data and government-oriented, publicly available data.
  • GovCloud restricts physical and logical administrative access to US citizens, and can run workloads that contain all categories of CUI data.
  • AWS only allows vetted US citizens with access controls to administer the GovCloud Region, and the AWS GovCloud sovereign cloud is completely isolated from Amazon.com.
  • Even though AWS does manage access controls for GovCloud, each business is responsible for controlling their own content.

Do you have questions about moving to the Cloud? Do you think AWS GovCloud is the right move for your business, or do you want to learn more? Oxalis provides AWS Govcloud Services that can help you scale your efforts.

What are the benefits of AWS GovCloud?

There are many benefits of Amazon’s AWS as a cloud platform. For people unfamiliar with what AWS offers, here is a quick run down of the most common AWS Cloud services and why they matter:

Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) AWS Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2), one of the basic building blocks of any AWS cloud solution, provides dynamic and scalable compute capacity. EC2 is available in pay-as-you-go plans or discounted long-term contracts.

Business Example: EC2 can be used for dedicated hosting of applications, software and websites on the cloud. Dynamic and scalable compute capabilities make EC2 a key solution for a growing application or application
Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) The second key building block of an AWS cloud solution, S3 provides secure data storage on the cloud. S3 storage is accessible from any system connected to the internet and correctly authenticated into your AWS configuration.

Business Example: Permission-based file storage, accessible from anywhere by individuals or applications with the appropriate credentials.
Amazon Aurora andย Amazon DynamoDB Amazon Aurora and DynamoDB are the final core building blocks of the AWS cloud solution, offering relational and nonrelational database capabilities, respectively.
Amazon Aurora is a relational database built for your cloud services and is compatible with both MySQL and PostgreSQL.
Amazon DynamoDB is the NoSQL parallel to Amazon Aurora.

Business Example: Cost-effective open source database solution for your cloud applications and environments.
AWS Lambda Similar to EC2, AWS Lambda offers compute capacity in the cloud, but executes serverlessly. Lambda comes at a small premium, but lets you run code without managing EC2s or incurring the ongoing costs of a dedicated instance. AWS Lambda will handle all administrative tasks, including server and system maintenance, capacity provisioning and scaling, and code monitoring and logging.

Business Example: Background tasks are best suited for AWS Lambda, where persistent server environments are not necessary and workloads are small, sporadic, or hard to predict.
Amazon ELB Distribute incoming application traffic using an Amazon ELB (Elastic Load Balancing). ELB can function across availability zones and services including EC2 instances, containers, IP addresses, Lambda functions, and virtual appliances.
Amazon VPC Amazonโ€™s virtual private network solution, isolated within the AWS GovCloud. Defined per your requirements and specifications, including private IP address range, subnets, route tables, and network gateways.

Business Example: Deploy a VPC and ELB to logically isolate production back-end services from public entry point.
Amazon Workspaces Secure, persistent, and managed cloud desktop virtualization services. Accessible from supported devices.

Business Example: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is a standard security practice for organizations desiring to centralize their workforce within compliant and secure desktop infrastructure. Amazon Workspaces is the AWS GovCloud-available solution to meet this need
Simple Email Service (SES) Recently added to the Amazon GovCloud (US) suite, SES is an email service for your AWS GovCloud (US) services.
Redshift Redshift is a data warehouse service in the cloud. Capable of managing petabytes of data, Redshift is the AWS solution for acquiring new insights for your business.
CloudWatch CloudWatch is AWSโ€™s resource monitor service that can be used to collect and track metrics relevant for your applications and resources.

Business Example: Set up alarms to alert your administrators during an unauthorized access attempt to your AWS Console. Tie these alarms to a slack channel for quick and distributed alerting.ย
An overview of a reference implementation can be found below:

AWS works constantly to improve their service offerings. Examples of recently announced GovCloud improvements include:

  • Adding Amazon SageMaker Studio to AWS GovCloud (US) Regions: SageMaker Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) that provides a single web-based visual interface where you can quickly upload data, use notebooks on a wide range of instance types, train and tune models, run experiments, and collaborate seamlessly within your organization.
  • Adding AWS CodePipeline to AWS GovCloud (US-East): CodePipeline automates the build, test, and deploy phases of your release process when there is a code change, based on the release model you define.
  • Adding AWS Directory Service support for smart card authentication in AWS GovCloud (US-East) Region: Use Common Access Card (CAC) and Personal Identity Verification (PIV) smart cards to authenticate users into Amazon WorkSpaces through your self-managed Active Directory (AD) and AWS Directory Service AD Connector.

A full list of AWS GovCloud services can be found on the product details page: AWS GovCloud (US) Product Details – Amazon Web Services.

How do AWS GovCloud (US)’s Services Differ from Standard AWS’s?

AWS GovCloud vs AWS. Compliant vs. General Purpose. Premium vs Bargain. How do these two AWS tiers stack up against each other and is GovCloud worth it?

The good news is that both products provide agencies and businesses with a complete infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. This includes all of the above-mentioned compute, analytics, networking, monitoring, and storage services. If you need compliance, though, standard AWS can’t help you, since its data may be stored outside the continental U.S. and managed by non-US citizens, and AWS GovCloud (US) endpoints are only accessible to AWS GovCloud (US) customers. Similarly, FIPS 140-2 compliant endpoints are also available exclusively for AWS GovCloud (US) Regions.

It’s important to note that while most AWS services are available in GovCloud, there are often limitations, missing features, and restrictions to GovCloud services โ€“ due to the challenges of meeting compliance requirements. AWS provides a complete list of these differences, so do your homework. Here are a few examples:

  1. EC2: Instances must be launched in an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.
  2. S3: The features S3 Transfer Acceleration, S3 Replication Time Control (S3 RTC), S3 Storage Lens are unavailable.
  3. AWS Trusted Advisor: Not all checks are supported in GovCloud.
  4. Amazon Cognito: Not all features are supported in GovCloud.

What Regulatory and Compliance Requirements can be Satisfied by AWS GovCloud (US)?

AWS GovCloud (US) is designed to meet the most stringent regulatory and compliance requirements encountered by U.S. Government agencies and contractors. Below is a list of some of these frameworks supported by AWS GovCloud (US):

  • International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) – ITAR controls the export of sensitive defense and military data, information, and technology.
  • Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) – DFARS is actually supported by the standard AWS cloud as well as GovCloud. This regulation applies to the safeguarding of DoD data, which includes data in the cloud.
  • The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) – A Federal Government program that provides standardized security assessment and authorization criteria, as well as continuous monitoring for cloud products and services.
  • Department of Defense (DoD) Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (DOD SRG) – Standardizes the security assessment and authorization process for sensitive Defense Department data and systems operating in the cloud.
  • Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) – The DoDโ€™s comprehensive cybersecurity program to protect sensitive information.
  • Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) – Governs the security of criminal justice information services for federal and state and local law enforcement.
  • IRS-1075 – Applies to the protection of federal tax information.
  • FIPS 140-2, which specifies cryptographic security requirements to protect sensitive U.S. government information.
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) – Protects the processing and storage of health information.
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – Protects European Union (EU) individualsโ€™ fundamental right to privacy and the protection of personal data.

AWS provides a full list of compliance certifications, attestations, regulations, alignments, and frameworks that are satisfied by GovCloud. It is important to note here that AWS GovCloud provides the infrastructure and design to enable customers to meet these regulatory requirements, but ultimately the implementation of cloud services within AWS GovCloud requires careful and intentional management to ensure security and compliance.ย

What are the Pros and Cons of AWS GovCloud versus Azure Government or regular AWS?

An entire article could be dedicated to this comparison, but for the sake of this blog we will keep it short. Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure make up the largest public cloud services. Each company has made significant investment in security for their standard tier cloud infrastructure and extended that into full Government compliance with the AWS GovCloud and Azure Government offerings.

A few considerations to take into account:

  1. AWS has been around longer. Launched in 2006 with the standard cloud offering, AWS was the first to offer Government-level compliant cloud services.
  2. AWS features quick-start guides, helping you configure your instances to the tightest compliance requirements, such as HIPAA and CMMC.
  3. Both solutions offer Secret and Top Secret regions, to meet the unique security needs of the Intelligence Community (IC) –ย  Azure Secret and Top Secret and AWS Secret and Top Secret

What does AWS GovCloud Pricing Look Like? What Does Amazon Web Service Hosting Cost?

The AWS offerings within standard and GovCloud are vast and flexible. For the purposes of this quick comparison, we will focus on relative costs of the major compute and storage offerings of AWS Govcloud vs AWS. AWS is the standard for cloud-based offerings and can be taken as a benchmark when calculating the impact of moving to a compliant cloud like AWS GovCloud.ย

Note: Cloud compute and storage prices are constantly in flux so please consult the AWS calculator for the most up-to-date pricing: https://calculator.aws. The numbers included below are up-to-date as of August 2021.

Before diving into the numbers, letโ€™s have a look at the AWS compute tiers to better understand what options are available and begin to decipher Amazonโ€™s naming conventions. EC2 offers the most customization and the options can often be overwhelming when reviewed for the first time. Read on to learn the framework. Contact us to learn more about AWS Govcloud Services.

An Intro to EC2 Tiers

Amazon groups EC2 compute options into tiers, which offer varying optimization balances to maximize your EC2 purchase. These tiers are differentiated by an alphanumeric ID representing the ratio of Memory, vCPU, Network Performance, and Storage provided to each instance. Each tier is cost-optimized for that particular ratio. You can use the AWS calculator to determine the appropriate tier based on a particular memory or vCPU requirement, or you can select a specific tier via the Advanced Estimate option.

The EC2 Families

To better understand the AWS offerings, we can group the tiers into five families:

  1. General Purpose
    • T3, T3a, T2 Instance Types are configured for the lowest price general purpose computing.ย
    • These are your standard current-generation instances for a majority of your application support needs.
  2. Compute Optimized
    • The C5, C5n, and C4 instance types offer the lowest price per CPU ratio of the instance types.
  3. Memory Optimized
    • The R6g, R5, R5a, R5n, R4, X1e, and X1 instance types are memory optimized with standard network performance for a more affordable option than the Accelerated Computing family.
  4. Accelerated Computing
    • P3, P2, Inf1, G4, G3, and F1 feature accelerated computing with high Network Performance ratings and enormous Memory options.
  5. Storage Optimized
    • The I3, I3en, D2, and H1 families make up the storage optimized instances, featuring dedicated SSD storage instead of the standard EBS storage option.

1000 77.85 93.42 20% Increase

Pricing Analysis Summary

Increased compliance and security comes at an increased cost. Approximately 25% greater cost.

As expected, our calculations show that AWS GovCloud (US) is more expensive than standard, approximately 10% to 70% increase in cost, depending on the service. Some key takeaways:

  • Certain services, such as CloudWatch, did not experience a significant price change (7-8%) when upgraded to an AWS GovCloud (US) datacenter deployment while Lambda services did not increase in price at all.
  • Storage was the most significant increase in price at an average of 69% increase
  • Compute resources fell within the average with a 18% – 26% increase in price for computing.

How do you Implement AWS GovCloud?

So youโ€™ve decided AWS GovCloud is the right solution for your needs. How do you go about purchasing a license and getting started with configuration? The first step is to sign up for the service, which can be done manually or through a solution provider such as Oxalis.

Interested in contacting a Govcloud services provider? Learn more about Us.

  • Option 1 โ€“ Create an AWS GovCloud (US) account through a Solution Provider.
    • Recommended for organizations who donโ€™t yet know what AWS services they will need, or those who are interested in optimizing their AWS GovCloud procurement and resource allocation.
  • Option 2 โ€“ Create an AWS GovCloud (US) from a standalone AWS account.
    • To do this, create or log into your AWS standard account and navigate to the โ€œMy Accountโ€ page at the top of the Console
    • At the bottom of the โ€œMy fAccountโ€ page, there will be a GovCloud (US) section. If you do not see this section, ensure you logged in with the root credentials otherwise, create a support ticket. Click โ€œSign up for AWS GovCloud (US).โ€
    • This will navigate you to the AWS GovCloud (US) Sign Up Portal where it will ask you to accept the AWS GovCloud (US) legal agreement and provide additional information, so we can verify your eligibility for an AWS GovCloud (US) account.

  • Option 3 โ€“ Create an AWS GovCloud (US) with AWS Organizations.ย
    • AWS Organizations allows your organization to create and manage a set of accounts across regions and partitions.
    • For more information on AWS Organizations, visit https://aws.amazon.com/organizations/.

Account Linking

Since AWS GovCloud (US) accounts are associated with standard AWS accounts for billing, service, and support purposes, customers are required to have an existing standard account before signing up for an AWS GovCloud (US) account. It is recommended to create a new AWS account that will only be used solely for AWS GovCloud sign up and billing to ensure your standard AWS workloads will not be affected when transferring or closing GovCloud accounts.

Onboarding

There are a few steps required to onboard your AWS GovCloud account, which are outlined here:

  • Sign in to your account.
  • Create an alias for your account.
  • Create and download access keys.
  • Verify AWS CloudTrail is Enabled.

Configuration

At this step, we recommend configuring a few console items to secure your account before allocating any AWS services or migrating data to the cloud:

  • Configure the AWS CLI
  • Create an IAM User to Access the Console
  • Configure Audit Logging
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for IAM users
  • Sign Up for AWS GovCloud (US) Customer Support

Allocation

Last but not least, you will need to procure the AWS services that your organization needs for the cloud. Below is an example of what a final implementation may look like for a moderately-sized application on AWS GovCloud (US):

Atlassian’s Team 23 Takeaways & Product Announcements

We’re thrilled to announce that Oxalis attended Atlassian’s Team ’23 event in Las Vegas. Our team is excited to share the latest news about the Atlassian product announcements, and share how they directly impact your business. Who are these tools and updates for? And how can you best maximize your Atlassian investment with these upgrades?

Atlassianโ€™s core mission is to unleash the potential of every team. They understand that different teams work differently, which is why Atlassian has enhanced their platform to enable teams to balance autonomy and alignment, and work differently together. Did you know Atlassian just surpassed 250,000 customers? Distributed work is here to stay, and technology is a core of every business. Letโ€™s take a look at the latest product announcement and updates.

Atlassian Cloud Platform Updates

Atlassian Intelligence โ€“ Your New 24/7 Virtual Teammate

Atlassian has been integrating AI capabilities into its products for years, and Team ’23 announced the most significant leap forward yet. Meet your new virtual team member: Atlassian Intelligence uses generative AI technology from OpenAI to help unlock your team’s full potential. In keeping with Atlassian’s commitment to security, their partnership with OpenAI includes a zero-day retention policy, ensuring that no data is stored on OpenAI systems.ย

Atlassian Intelligence interacts with text in Jira and Confluence to help you work more effectively by creating, summarizing, and extracting information from content. It’s there when you’re searching Jira issues, defining test plans, responding to customer requests, creating a new Confluence page using content from other pages โ€“ and more, and can do work for you.

Atlassian Intelligence and Jira Service Management
Atlassian Intelligence generates a summary of the support history for a Jira Service Management ticket.

Who Can Use It?

As of this post, Atlassian Intelligence has a waitlist for beta testing.ย  Sign up to participate in the testing.ย

How Will It Help?

Here are some of Atlassian Intelligence’s key abilities:

  • In Jira issue searches: Turn natural language into JQL.
  • In Confluence pages: Extract decisions and actions from meeting minutes.
  • In Jira Software: Help define test plans.
  • In Jira comments: Craft the perfect response, including changing the entire tone.
  • In Confluence pages: Jumpstart a first draft by pulling information from multiple Confluence pages.
  • In Jira Service Management: Via a virtual agent, meet user needs based on its understanding of knowledge base articles, and ask follow-up questions to take any necessary actions.
  • In Atlassian Analytics: Turn natural language queries into the SQL you need to analyze and visualize data across Atlassian products and connected third-party tools.

Atlassian Intelligence saves users time and frees them up for more meaningful work, which can dramatically accelerate what teams achieve.

You can see Atlassian Intelligence in action in Atlassian’s video demo.

Atlassian Together

Atlassian has bundled their entire suite of work management products (Confluence, Trello, Jira Work Management, and Atlas) into a single cloud subscription with a unified admin experience. Each product within Atlassian Together empowers teams to work the way they want, while removing the barriers that keep teams from fully integrating.

Atlassian Together

Who Can Use It?

Enterprise Cloud plans have access to this bundle.ย

How Will It Help?

As with insurance, bundling products saves money.ย  But Atlassian Together’s benefit extends beyond direct savings by integrating the work of entire organizations. Atlassian’s products have until recently focused on enhancing the performance of technical teams, but organizations will struggle to reach their full potential as long as business teams and technical teams remain siloed, operating on completely different platforms with disparate and disconnected tools.

Atlassian Together integrates seamlessly with Jira Software and Jira Service Management. This suite of work management products unblocks open, agile transformation for all teams, enabling unprecedented cross-company collaboration. It also improves asynchronous collaboration among distributed teams, by making it easy for people to: pick up where teammates leave off, follow, track, and contribute to important work along the way. And the more employees can collaborate asynchronously, the fewer meetings they need to stay in sync โ€“ย which frees up even more time to be productive.

Atlassian Analyticsย

Individual Atlassian products typically come with their own reporting, but for larger organizations with many products, there has been no good way to create complex reports from data across Atlassian AND third-party data sources. Atlassian Analytics meets this need, providing straightforward and adaptable methods for visualizing data from Atlassian products as well as non-Atlassian data sources such as Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and more.

Atlassian Analytics

Who Can Use It?

Atlassian Analytics is built into the Enterprise Cloud plan.ย  If youโ€™re already on Enterprise, you can add it to your site.ย  If youโ€™re interested in upgrading to Enterprise, we can help.ย

How Will It Help?

Need to understand how your development cycle is delivering value to your customers? With Atlassian Analytics, you can measure the ratio of defects and bugs to the total issues completed in a given time period, while tracking lead time, cycle time, and the distribution of work completed.

Need to track key metrics across change, incident, and request management? Now you can move beyond merely monitoring trends in change request resolution, to more advanced approaches like analyzing objects in your asset and configuration management system, their related issues and projects, and time spent on them.

In Atlassian Analytics, you configure which products and instances you want to pull data from, then include or exclude projects (Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Opsgenie), assets, or spaces (Confluence). You can use pre-built reporting templates, or build custom views and spin up new charts.

This see-everything-at-once reporting solution will speed up decision-making at all levels across your DevOps, IT service management, and business teams by giving you access to more comprehensive, integrated data.

New Products

ย At Team ’23, Atlassian revealed their highly-anticipated security product, Beacon.ย

Beacon

beacon

Beacon builds on an internal anomaly detection program Atlassian developed for their own security teams; it won a 2022 ARN Innovation Awards in the Vendor Innovation category. They describe it as “an intelligent threat detection engine, built for Atlassian Cloud products.” Beacon provides a system of intelligence over your entire Atlassian Cloud suite, ingesting user activity and alerting you to review events that might post a risk. You may take all the precautions you can to prevent intruders from breaching your Atlassian Cloud suite, but if they do get in, you need to be prepared to catch them as soon as possible, and Beacon will help you.

Who Can Use It?

As of this post, Beacon is available for early access to all customers who sign up, and is free in beta. Keep your organization secure with the next generation of threat detection. ย

How Will It Help?

Beacon continuously monitors your Atlassian Cloud suite for five different kinds of events:ย

  1. Authorization and access events: Safeguard your data against unauthorized access with alerts for unusual logins, policy changes, password resets, and API key changes.ย
  2. Data exfiltration events: Secure the flow of information throughout your business with alerts for mass exports, audit log exports, and external syncing risks.ย
  3. Unusual user activity: Spot high-risk user behavior at scale with alerts for suspicious searches and excessive crawling on Confluence and Jira.ย
  4. Product configuration events: Surface insecure configurations that can impact your companyโ€™s hosted data, whether theyโ€™re created by accident or by malicious actors.ย
  5. Integration change events: Always know which apps have access to your systems with alerts for marketplace and ecosystem app installs.ย

If your admins are already taking all these steps, Beacon will save them time, and you money. If they’re not doing these things, then Beacon will make your Atlassian suite a whole lot more secure.

Jira Product Discovery

This new Atlassian product meets the particular needs ofProject and Product Managers on software teams, who are underserved by other Jira products. It providesa standardized, out-of-the-box tool for PMs to capture ideas โ€“ whether feature requests, bugs, input from stakeholders, etc. โ€“ย organize them, prioritize them, communicate them visually via roadmap views, and convert them into Jira Software issues.

Until Jira Product Discovery, it was possible to use, for instance, Jira Work Management to handle this process, but that required Jira admins to set up each custom project, and still wouldn’t do everything a PM needs in the way they need it.

Jira Product Discovery
The All Ideas view in Jira Product Discovery

Who Can Use It?

As of this post, Jira Product Discovery is in beta for public testing. You can sign up to participate for free.

How Will It Help?

The success or failure of software teams can depend on how well the PM manages the team’s workload. A hodgepodge of spreadsheets and presentations may sort of get the job done, but it doesn’t maximize your team’s potential.

  • Bring order to chaos: Collect ideas and insights, wherever they come from, in one place.
  • Refine and distil: Assign each one a Goal, a Priority, a Strategic Value, and a User Impact (and other fields), then add key decisions and next steps.
  • Track the delivery: Create Jira Software issues right from the idea, then track the progress there.

Jira Product Discovery will help you do the right things, in the right order, and at the right time, focusing on work that will deliver on benefits.

New Features for Existing Products

Bring Your Own Encryption Keys

Data Management security

Atlassian continues to prioritize security. All customer data in Atlassian Cloud products is encrypted at rest and in transit, and until now, only Atlassian had the encryption keys. Soon they will allow you to use your own keys to encrypt your Cloud product data, affording you more control and therefore โ€“ if properly managed โ€“ย an extra layer of security..

Who Can Use It?

An Early Access Program will be available Q1 2023 as part of Atlassian’s Enterprise plan.

How Will It Help?

The benefits of BYOK encryption include:

  • Reduced risk:ย BYOK adds another layer of protection for sensitive data.
  • Improved data governance:ย Access to encryption keys hosted in your AWS account can be logged and monitored via AWSย CloudTrail.
  • Increased control:ย You can revoke access to your encryption keys without vendor reliance.

Confluence Updates

ย Confluence is receiving various eye-catching enhancements, such as the introduction of a built-in whiteboarding content format, global commenting functionality, automation, and generative AI-powered abilities.ย

Confluence Whiteboards

Confluence Whiteboards

Whiteboards add a dynamic component to Confluence, giving you a digital canvas to collaborate, share ideas and visualize work with features such as stickers, shapes, lines, and more. How many times have we all posted a photo of the whiteboard from the meeting room? That gets the information into Confluence, but it’s not useful or interactive. With Confluence Whiteboards, the content you add can link to and interact with Jira and other Confluence pages.

Who Can Use It?

Everyone with a subscription to Confluence Cloud, on any plan, can join the Early Access Program waitlist for beta.

How Will It Help?

Confluence’s new whiteboards will add a visual, dynamic way to brainstorm, organize, and conceptualize while keeping it all digital, in a way Confluence hasn’t been able to before.ย

  • Freedom of expression: Brainstorm, collaborate, and diagram on an endless canvas.
  • Turn ideas into action: Convert stickies into Jira issues and Confluence pages; connect Jira issues together to map out work; edit Jira issues and Confluence pages without leaving your whiteboard.
  • Everything in one place: Whiteboards keeping your ideas, plans, and tasks connected in one hub, providing access for all and creating transparency by automatically ensuring every team can access information.
  • Cost savings: Consolidate tools with a digital whiteboard for no extra cost โ€“ it is included with Confluence.

Automate, Integrate, Migrate: Everything within Confluence

Automation for Confluence enables admins to manage content, organize spaces, and notify teams of important updates without the manual overhead. When admins create rules, Confluence Automation works behind the scenes to complete routine functions that would otherwise have to be done manually. And you can use pre-built rule templates for popular Confluence actions.

Automation for Confluence

Who Can Use It?

Automation is available to all Confluence Cloud Premium and Enterprise customers.

How Will It Help?

As with Automation for Jira, this new feature for Confluence saves time on tedious manual tasks, so you can get back to the work that really matters.

Here are some of the things Automation for Confluence can do:

  • Send team updates on work progress.
  • Remind people about incomplete tasks.
  • Auto-archive outdated or inactive content.
  • Auto-label or find-and-replace page labels.
  • Efficiently manage large amounts of external data from sources such as CSV files, databases, and other applications through bulk operations.
  • Provide an intuitive, text-based user interface to help you quickly construct commands and recall past actions.
  • Keep a log of previous actions, available in a readable JSON format.

Learn more about Confluence Automation.

Coming Soon to Confluence: ย We can expect capabilities that will help enable secure and seamless collaboration with people who are not within your organization via External Collaboration, Confluence Guests, and Public Links. ย

What About Scalability?

Team โ€™23 announced that Jira Software will expand from 30K users to 50K, and Jira Service Management will handle 20K agents instead of just 10K. ย

It’s also worth mentioning that the Atlassian Admin hub serves as a central mission control where you can conveniently manage your users and product subscriptions in a single location. Atlassian constantly introduces new features to the Admin hub, such as visibility and monitoring of app and product usage through audit logs.ย

Atlassian Administration

End Bad Service Management with Jira Service Management (JSM)

The upcoming updates of Jira Service Management include team-managed configurations, which let you customize the service desk according to your requirements without disrupting other teams. Additionally, JSM will introduce a Customer support template, promoting visibility and preventing silos.

Many businesses suffer from bad service management. A few of the common culprits are bloated budgets, irritable teammates, blurred vision, migraines from setup complexity, nausea from outdated experiences and paralysis death of deployments, but fortunately with Jira Service Management you can get rid of the principal IT service management pitfalls.ย ย

End Bad Service Management

You can enjoy multiple advantages by using Jira Service Management such as customization, integration, workflow automation, reporting and scalability. Overall, Jira Service Management is a powerful tool for managing ITSM processes, providing businesses with the flexibility, integration, and automation capabilities they need to deliver high-quality services to their customers.ย

Atlassian announced a discount of 30% off the first year of JSM through June of 2023 with a 3-year commitment.

5 Biggest Business Technology Trends in 2023:

How you work today is not going to be how you work tomorrow. We all know there will be many challenges ahead for businesses in 2023 and beyond. More people are working from home and teams are distributed across the globe. How can you keep these distributed teams connected and operating at maximum efficiency?

Are you able to rest easy knowing your data is secure? Technology is confusing. We get it. And now more than ever, technology needs to seamlessly and effectively work for your business without disrupting your day-to-day and slowing you down. How can you be assured your tools and your systems will continue to deliver results that work?

Letโ€™s dive into our teamโ€™s Top 5 projected business trends your business can expect in 2023 and discover these trends, challenges and potential opportunities.

5 Biggest Business Technology Trends in 2023

1. Keeping distributed teams connected. Optimization.

2. Data security

3. Accelerated digital technology transformation

4. Combating inflation and supply chain security

5. Sustainability technology

1. Keeping distributed teams connected. Optimization.

Nowadays, keeping distributed teams connected demands new ways to collaborate.

Being on top of your information management is essential for any company of every size. Your business needs scalable, accessible, and powerful systems. When you implement technology systems and tools effectively and optimizing them, you’ll be able to automate tasks, improve and streamline processes and increase efficient communication.

Reliable IT systems are vital for businesses to stay competitive. You keep your edge by improving data-driven decision making and maintaining the value integrity of AI systems. At Oxalis, we’re dedicated to helping you lead more efficiently and effectively so your company can reach new heights. With our expertise, you’ll be able to overcome staffing gaps and stagnation and keep moving forward toward success.

2. Data security

Okay, this is nothing new. But with the rapid pace of change in the workforce these past few years, itโ€™s no surprise this one made the list.

The rapid change of technology advancements in the workplace has indeed spearheaded change, produced pros and cons, and challenged the norm; this in turn has negatively accelerated threats to personal data. Protecting data for your business and those you serve is no longer an option or a secondary thought for businesses, but an integral part of the day-to-day operations affecting upcoming transactions and the future stake of your company.

In case you’re still considering if technology consulting is a good fit for your teams, consider these statistics:

โ€œThe growing need for near real-time insights, compliance with data residency and privacy regulations, uninterrupted and reliable operations, and security of centralized environments, combined with an appetite to move away from massive infrastructure investments, drives tremendous demand for edge to bring compute and storage much closer to where the action is…โ€

Bhargs Srivathsan, partner, McKinsey
Business trends 2023

3. Accelerated digital technology transformation

Industries are exposed to changes resulting from technological innovation and the diffusion of new technology-enabled business practices. Scaling agile is a complex, multidimensional topic. It involves changing people’s (skills and mindset), practices (rituals and habits), and their tools. Most organizations struggle to scale agile due to a multitude of factors, but the most common one we see is general confusion of how to utilize the tools and methods to best fit their current business model and scale with them into the future.

If you’re looking to plan, deliver, and track progress across your teams at scale, utilizing agile methodologies can be a good starting point.

To maintain a high level of innovation, organizations must deliver customer solutions faster and more reliably โ€“ a properly scaled agile methodology makes this possible.

4. Combating inflation and supply chain security

According to KPMG’s “The supply chain trends shaking up 2023“:

โ€œIn 2023, amid these disruptions, there will likely be some key supply chain trends to manage. Managing your organizationโ€™s response to these can be a critical opportunity in the year ahead. At KPMG, from within our Global Operations Centre of Excellence, we firmly believe that: nations will be skeptical about cross-border trade cooperation; cyber criminals will ramp up activity; there will be key material access turmoil; manufacturing footprints will change shape; retail and distribution supply chains are morphing rapidly; supply chain technology investments will accelerateโ€ฆโ€

According to a Forbes article by Richard Howells, “2023 Supply Chain Predictions: Resiliency, Sustainability And Visibility Set New Expectations”:

5. Sustainability technology

How do you pursue sustainable technology?

We know that technology impacts all areas of every business, according to McKinsey & Company, and in the process of digital transformation, there are five areas of risk for new technology implementation:

  • Business: Taking primary responsibility for soundness and application of data ethics and maintaining a data-driven culture
  • Society: Safeguarding societal values from business actions and maintaining internal awareness about the societal duty of the organization
  • Operational risk: Establish robustness of processes and control and mitigate operational risk
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with a data-driven culture, regulations, and internal policies
  • Legal: Proactively advise business lines and the rest of the organization with legal matters

According to Gartner’s there are 10 technology trends for 2023.
